What 585 means
Karat divides the alloy into 24 parts. 14 out of 24 parts are about 58.3%, and in practice, the international standard marks 585 to ensure a minimum of 58.5% gold. The rest of the weight is copper, silver, zinc, or palladium, depending on the colour.
White, yellow, and red gold can all be 14K. The colour does not change the gold content, but white gold is sometimes plated with rhodium, which does not significantly affect the weight.
Calculation example
Assume a 14K chain with a total weight of 10 grams, without stones. The amount of pure gold is 10 multiplied by 0.585, which is 5.85 grams. This number is multiplied by the current reference price per pure gram to get a theoretical value.
If the pendant has a stone weighing an estimated 0.4 grams, it is deducted first: 9.6 grams net multiplied by 0.585 = 5.616 grams pure. There is no fixed price here — it is retrieved from the market at the time of calculation.
- 10 grams × 0.585 = 5.85 grams pure
- Stone deduction before multiplying by purity
- Reference price changes in real time
When 14K is surprising during testing
Some jewellery is marked 14K but is partially made of a different alloy — for example, a clasp or spring. In other cases, it is a thick plating over a base metal. Therefore, the hallmark is a starting point, and the physical test is what determines it.
There is also hollow jewellery that looks heavy and weighs light. Weight, not volume, is what determines it.
The next step
Open the gold calculator and select "14 Karat · 585". Enter the total weight and the deduction to get an estimate. The pure gold price per gram is calculated based on XAU/USD divided by 31.1034768 multiplied by the USD/ILS exchange rate. Any price shown on the site is a non-binding estimate.
