The difference in numbers
14K contains 58.5% gold, 18K contains 75%. One gram of 18K has about 28% more pure gold than a gram of 14K.
Therefore, it is important not to mix karats in the same weighing.
- 10 grams of 14K = 5.85 grams of pure gold
- 10 grams of 18K = 7.5 grams of pure gold
Why sorting is important
If all jewelry is weighed together and calculated based on the lower purity, you might lose money. Sort in advance according to the hallmark.
In the calculator, you can enter each group as a separate item.
Differences in testing
18K jewelry is more common with settings and stones, so deductions may be higher. 14K jewelry is common in heavy chains and bracelets.
In both cases, physical testing determines the purity.
Additional markings you will encounter
Besides 14K and 18K you will encounter 9K (375), 21K (875), and 22K (916), common in jewellery from the Middle East and India. In the calculator, you can choose them all. The higher the karat, the softer the gold and the deeper yellow the color.
Old jewellery from Europe is sometimes marked 333 (8K). If the hallmark is not on the list, mention it in the inquiry.
- 9K = 375
- 21K = 875
- 22K = 916
- 8K = 333
Why not weigh everything together
Suppose 10 grams of 14K and 10 grams of 18K. If everything is weighed together and calculated as 14K, you get 11.7 grams pure instead of 13.35. The difference — 1.65 grams of pure gold — is lost in the calculation.
In a professional inspection, every item is checked, but sorting in advance allows you to ensure the calculation is done correctly.
The next step
The pure gold price per gram is calculated according to XAU/USD divided by 31.1034768 multiplied by the USD/ILS exchange rate. Every price displayed on the site is a non-binding estimate.
