The value remains in the metal
A buyer of old gold focuses mainly on gold content. A break, bend, or missing link does not change the purity, nor the weight (unless a part was lost).
Therefore, there is no reason to be embarrassed by damaged items.
Do not repair
Repairing before selling costs money and does not add to the gold's value. Soldering may even add material of a different purity.
If the item has sentimental value and you are hesitating, you can consider repair — but not as an investment before selling.
What to collect
Collect all parts: links, clasps, single earrings. Even small parts accumulate.
Separate according to the hallmark, and put unidentified items in a separate bag.
- Links and clasps
- Single earrings
- Loose stones (for safekeeping)
Mixed jewellery and old repairs
Jewellery that has been repaired in the past may include lower-purity solder, a link replaced with another metal, or a steel clasp. These do not disqualify the jewellery, but they affect the net weight.
If you remember that the jewellery was repaired, mention it. It helps the inspection focus on the right place.
Sentimental value vs. metal value
Before selling, it is worth pausing and asking if there is an item you would like to keep or turn into a new piece of jewellery. Broken gold can serve as a base for custom production, subject to inspection.
If you have decided to sell, there is no reason to wait for the item to be "repaired" — the metal is what is measured.
